My Favorite Podcast - and WHY - 2024

Today, as I've been doing the last, I don't know, decade, I ask you, what's your favorite podcast?

But really what I'm asking is why?

Because as content creators, we want to make content that resonates with people in a way that inspires them to tell a friend.

And so I asked you, what's your favorite podcast?

Tell us a little bit about it and tell us why it's your favorite podcast.

And then of course, I always share the stage.

Tell us a little bit about your show and where we can find it.

And this is the 2024 version and I've not heard these yet, so we're going to listen to them together.

It's Steve Stewart, podcast editor for personal finance podcasters and now co host of the Podcast Editors Mastermind show, which we just started hosting that show starting in November of 2024 here with my favorite podcast of all time.

Well, we'll say of 2024, but it's been my favorite podcast for many years.

It's still the Stacking Benjamin Show.

If you don't know the Stacking Benjamin show yet, I highly recommend it.

The show is released three days a week.

They're about an hour long or more, but it's a variety show about every 15 minutes the hosts go into something different, whether it's a headline or.

Or they're talking about something that somebody put out on TikTok with some really great or usually bad advice about money.

They have a guest interview on most days Friday episodes.

They have a roundtable discussion around a blog post or something like that, which really gets to be, well, kind of hilarious at times, hearing the different viewpoints of each person.

On the Roundtable.

So this isn't a how to.

Although there is a lot of learning that can be done listening to the Stacking Management show, but it is definitely what money nerds like.

This is Kim Newlove from the Pharmacist Voice podcast and the Perrysburg Podcast.

My favorite show of 2024 is the erectile Dysfunction Radio Podcast, which you can find@enrectioniq.com Now, I know that this title sounds PG13, but just to give you some background on the show, this is a sex therapist talking to an audience of people who are trying to learn about erectile dysfunction.

It's nothing to giggle about.

I know that many people really struggle with it, men and then their spouses or partners by extension.

So I want to recommend this to your listeners.

Every single time an episode dropped, I was listening to it.

I used this podcast as prep work or research for two podcast episodes on my own show in 2024.

One of the episodes was in February for Valentine's Day.

We were talking about PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

And the other episode I was prepping for was in November, November 2024 and it was a Men's Health Awareness Month episode.

We were talking about the erectile dysfunction that men experience post prostatectomy.

This is a group of people who have had their prostate removed due to prostate cancer.

Although I was a listener for clinical reasons, I can see how this podcast would benefit many, many people, men and women alike.

So that's a little bit about the Erectile dysfunction radio podcast.

A little bit about both of those shows.

The first podcast is the Pharmacist's Voice Podcast which you can find@the pharmacistvoice.com we talk about pharmacy topics and careers so my audience feels connected to the profession of pharmacy and inspired to contribute to it.

After all, I am an Ohio licensed pharmacist.

The second show that I run is the Perrysburg Podcast.

I live in a small town called Perrysburg, Ohio and I created the podcast that I needed when I moved to town back in 2007.

We talk about what's in Harrisburg and why people like to live here.

Yeah, I think local podcasting is something that's going to be even more on the rise in the future.

I just see where local media.

I'll give you an example.

If I look at the newspaper for Akron, Ohio, it's almost the exact same stuff as Cleveland or not.

Well, Cleveland, true, but Cleveland is also the same as Columbus.

It's like there's very little actual local news coverage, which is really sad because that means all the politicians can do whatever they want.

And because that was Kim Newlove.

And in a couple questions of the months ago, she said, you should say more what you're using.

So right now I'm talking into the Rode podmic USB into a Rodecaster, which I've been tweaking my noise gate because it's driving me nuts with my furnace coming on and off.

So hopefully that's not super noticeable.

And right now I am using the Dialogue Enhance plugin from Accentize.

And what that does is right now, as I click on it, it's pulling a heck a lot of mids out of my voice.

But it's supposed to automatically EQ everybody.

And as you might imagine on this kind of show, I need that.

And then I'm using also from Accentize DX Revive Pro, which will cut out any kind of room noise and reverb.

Now that is not a cheap plugin, but I'm here to tell you I do audio from people that don't know how to record audio in a decent way.

And that has saved me so much time.

And then just for some sweetener, I'm running it through waves GW voice centric, just to add a little bit of sheen because sometimes the noise reduction gets a little aggressive.

So we put some of that back on.

But thank you so much, Kim.

And I didn't even mention the why of that show.

Obviously really helpful because the people that are in that situation need some information.

They're like, you know, again, a lot of snickering could be done here, but when you're like, nope, let's be adults and let's talk about what our options are here and what's working and what's not, that is hugely helpful.

And again, are you going to get that on tv?

No.

Are you going to get it in a newspaper?

No.

Are you going to get it in a magazine?

Maybe.

But in the end, this is why podcasting is amazing.

Because not everybody needs that show, but the people that need that show need that show.

Hi Dave, this is York from Welcome to Earth Stories.

Thinking back on 2024, I have a lot of favorites.

I mean, I'm one of those people that listen to so many podcasts.

I mean, I'm subscribed to about 194 shows and to think about, well, which one is my favorite, that's difficult.

But the show that gives me a lot of joy, gives me practical advice and makes me smile and that's Pod Tastic audio.

I've been listening since the very first episode until now.

And his show is just Incredible.

He's sort of like my kindred spirit when it comes to audio because he's a purist, just like me.

He gets into the weeds where he talks about microphones and just treating your room and making sure that your audio is right.

That's what I like about his show.

It's relatable.

He's a cool dude and there is no pretense with him.

What you see is what you get.

And that's what I like about Chris.

Also, sometimes he shares his personal life when he's not podcasting, because I like to hear that as well.

When I listen to certain shows, I.

I don't want to just hear about the topic at hand.

Some people just want to hear the facts, you know, just the facts, ma'am.

I like to hear things that are not even pertaining to the show.

Even when he's not doing his show, his social media feed, sometimes he throws in jokes here and there and he talks about his vacations and just personal things that's going on with him.

And it makes me even more, I guess, loyal to him as a podcaster, as a person.

Just that personal touch that he does.

They say that content is king, but not all the time, because I could get the content somewhere else, but it's how Chris presents it.

He's just a professional on the microphone and off of the microphone as well.

My show is like a cross between, well, let's put it this way.

Say, for instance, the Twilight Zone and Black Mirror had a baby.

York, I'm going to jump in here.

That is the coolest way to describe this show, because we kind of know what you know.

The Twilight Zone.

And you measure them, you go like, wait, what if I put those together?

What would it sound like?

And that creates an information gap to where your brain goes, wait, what would that sound like?

I kind of helped them.

It was Chris and Christine show, and when they first started out, I was kind of helping them out with that.

And so it's always interesting to, to see the student, you know, emerge now and who is also helping people.

So very cool.

Hello, this is Wolfman Mike of the 70s versus the 80s podcast.

And the one podcast that I never missed in 2024 was Beach Too sandy, Water too wet.

This is the podcast where they read one star reviews over dramatic music.

So they read Reviews from Yelp TripAdvisor for example.

Recently they just did reviews of holiday yard inflatables.

They did reviews of snow shoveling services and reviews of trampoline parks.

I just really admire this podcast because they tapped into such a simple premise.

I mean, they have this never ending harvest of comedy gold because people always want the world to know exactly what they're thinking.

And they are more than happy to give a one star review to a cave tour because of the ambiance of the place.

So I think everybody should check out that podcast.

It's a brother and sister team.

They've been on for a while now, and I think they're really starting to hit their stride.

And the shows always sound fresh.

And speaking of fresh, over at the 70s versus the 80s podcast, we just went through the holiday season.

So for the Halloween episode, we did the song Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon and we tried to figure out why it was not in the movie American Werewolf in London.

For the Thanksgiving episode, we talked about Turkeys Away by WKRP in Cincinnati.

We decided that that was the greatest half hour in sitcom history.

But then for Christmas, we did the 1978 Star Wars Holiday special, and we decided that might be the worst two hours in the history of television.

I love the fact one star reviews read over dramatic music.

This reminds me a lot of 2005.

This is the kind of wacky stuff people were doing that it's, it's kind of like we were trying to not be the radio and we were, you know, we weren't talking like this and it was crazy wacky stuff.

Just to see if it would work was super creative.

Now I'm not sure that we're as creative.

Maybe we are.

I'm just not aware of it.

I mean, back in 2005, if there was a new podcast, all the other podcasters would know about it because there was only about 30 of us at the time.

And Wolfman, see, when he says Wolfman, I expect him to sound like this baby, but it's.

That's a whole other wolf Man.

And I got some trivia for you.

Do you know who the first time one very young Jon Bon Jovi sang on an album, it was some sort of Star Wars Christmas album.

And it was like something about R2D2 or something like that.

I heard him talking about that, I think on the Hulu thing.

That literally that was lol.

I was lolling, but sawing the scenes here.

Hi Dave, my name is Harris and.

My favorite show for 2024 was Founders.

The website for that podcast is found@founderspodcast.com.

The podcast is by David Senra, who has read 373 novels about the greatest business founders of all time.

Each episode is about a single book.

David takes about six hours to read the book.

He then turns it into a one hour podcast and I play it at double spe.

So it only takes me half an.

Hour to basically read a book.

That would have taken six hours after 373 of them.

I've learned a tremendous amount about the greatest founders.

It's perhaps the greatest life hack I have found.

And as a lifelong learner, my battle is to gain as much knowledge as.

I can with the amount of limited time that I have left on the planet.

And if I can consume 373 novels that I would have loved to read in only half an hour each, what greater way to gain knowledge quickly?

In fact, there's so much information, it really should be a college course, because who better to learn from than the greatest founders?

As for my podcast, I do a podcast about the law with my daughter Nicolette Cohen.

Before I tell you about that, let me tell you about my favorite podcast in 2024 and it is a repeat and it is Al and Jerry's post game podcast.

Al and Jerry work on the Boomerang show on WFAN Sports Radio in New York City and their podcast is recorded after the radio show is over.

And they don't talk about sports.

Al and Jerry occasionally talk about things.

That happened on the Boomerangeo show, but.

They mostly talk about how robots are taking over the world, rats are taking over New York City, and how most.

Of the people that live in Florida are somewhat crazy.

It makes me laugh, it makes me.

Think, it entertains and sometimes it educates me and I just find it fascinating and I feel a connection with Al and Jerry.

So I'm recommending Al and Jerry's post game podcast and the podcast I'm representing.

Here is again Perpetual Syndication, a podcast.

I do with my wife where we watch classic TV shows one show at a time.

We are currently in our first season.

And we are re watching Home Improvement starring Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson.

Full disclosure, I'm a bit of a news and political junkie.

I live in Northern California.

I subscribe to the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and several other center left publications.

For a long time I've known about Commentary magazine, which has been around for some 75 years, but I'm not sure how I came to the podcast.

Their view is center right with a New York Jewish flavor.

These people are smart, funny, and unafraid to take on anyone.

The independent point of view that they provide on news and politics and cultural matters is as refreshing as anything I've heard all year.

And now new shows are, you know, some are far right, some are far left.

Then we talk about the no Agenda show.

It kind of just makes fun of everybody.

And so it's interesting hearing how like I get half of my, some of my news.

I get a lot of it from no Agenda.

I'll talk about what my favorite show is here in a bit, but I also watch things like Last Week Tonight, which is definitely left leaning but hilarious and it talks about stuff that I go, why isn't this on the mainstream?

And so again, going back to Kim Newlove, this is where local can really take off because nobody's govern it anymore.

Every morning when I open my podcast app, I check to see if David Hooper has published a new episode of Build a Big Podcast.

It's a marketing resource for those like me who want to grow their audience, establish themselves as an authority, and make money with their podcast.

I love this podcast because the content comes through the lens of a storyteller.

David talks about his career in radio and how he has had to deal with unreasonable agents, inebriated guests, and sometimes ethical dilemmas.

He talks about how he handled those situations and he offers advice to podcasters in case we ever find ourselves in that same podcaster pickle.

David also shares personal stories that I suspect other podcasters might want to bury.

Like the time he had a panic attack on stage, or the time he finally got to interview his number one dream guest, Dolly Parton on Music Business Radio.

The interview itself went great, and that's no surprise.

That could have been the only part of the story that David later talked about on Build a Big Podcast.

Instead, he also shared the conversation he had with his producer while they were on standby for Dolly.

Because that was also being recorded.

There was no mistaking how nervous David was, how starstruck, and as listeners later heard in the produced interview, how thoroughly prepared.

I have two podcasts on ritual recipes.

I share rituals for weddings, funerals and other rites of passage, as well as seasonal and goddess inspired rituals for spiritually minded women.

Craig Wieland, you're up buddy.

My podcast of the year for 2024 is a podcast called the Bugle.

B U G L E the Bugle, the tagline is an audio newspaper for a visual world.

It's a satirical news podcast and it's hosted by a British guy called Andy Zaltzman.

He has guest comedians come on to join him.

Recently he's had John Oliver on the show and every week they look at what's happening in the world and they comment on it from a satirical, humorous point of view.

There is obviously a British angle to the podcast, but they do cover stories from all over the world and they also have comedians and social commentators come on the show from all over the world, from India, the us, Australia, everywhere.

Why do I like it so much?

Some of the episodes are hilariously funny, laugh out loud funny as far as I'm concerned.

And all of the episodes talk about what been happening in the world in a light, conversational, entertaining way.

And that keeps me informed and it keeps me entertained.

It's not a podcast for everyone, but if you enjoy satire and silly comments on what are quite normally fairly depressing world events, this podcast definitely might be for you.

And so this is not Ron Eastwood, but it's.

It's a robot doing a pretty good job of reading Ron's email to me.

My favorite podcast of the past year is the Truce podcast hosted by Chris Starron.

You can find that@ trucepodcast.com his tagline says, this is the show that uses journalistic tools to look inside the Christian church to explore how we got here and how we can do better.

Why do I love it?

I grew up in the influence of conservative Christianity and the religious right.

It was not drummed into me, but more like the waters that I swam in.

Truce is examining historical events and I am finding that there is more to history than I was taught or chose to remember.

And this year, a lot of the content has been events that I lived through.

And I am finding there was a lot of things I missed in my understanding.

Besides the content itself, Chris does an amazing job of keeping it from becoming dry by mixing in sound effects, other voices, and sometimes settings where he is recording.

And don't worry, Chris does all this without becoming political.

Like Sergeant Joe Friday.

He just wants the facts.

As for me, I am probably a unicorn in your audience.

I got to talk to him a fair amount at the Spark Christian Podcast Conference.

And if you haven't heard, Misty is no longer going to do that.

She's moving in a different direction.

And so that's going to leave a hole in the Christian podcast conference sphere or whatever.

So if you've ever thought of maybe I should do a conference for Christian podcasters, there's a need for that because we're all kind of going like, we support Misty because I'm here to tell you, anybody that does any kind of meetup, any kind of conference, that is a huge amount of work.

And I know the last two years it just about like took her out.

It's just an amazing amount of stress.

It's a great conference and I thank her so much for that.

I'm so thankful that I can say I went to every, you know, Spark conference, but those are at this point, you know, on the back burner coming back ever.

We'll see.

But right now, no.

Well, here's something I've never done in the past because, well, it didn't really exist.

So I just exported all of those answers, had it transcribed using Otter AI, copied that and pasted it into Chat GPT.

And what was my exact prompt?

I said, so I asked some people what their favorite podcast was, but the main part it was looking for was why it was their favorite.

I had their answers transcribed.

Here are the answers and then I pasted the transcription and the thing I actually asked was, can you summarize their answers into a paragraph about why some podcasts resonate with their audience?

And here's what Chad GPT said.

It said podcasts resonate with listeners when they offer unique content, connect personally and serve a clear purpose.

Shows like the Stacking Benjamin show captivate with their creative, light hearted approach to complex topics like finance.

One no agenda intrigues by analyzing global media narratives with humor and insight.

Personal connection is key, as seen with Ask the Podcast Coach, where live interactions foster a loyal community, or podtastic Audio, where the host's relatable personality and behind the scenes glimpses build trust.

Haven't used the word distills a lot lately, but that's just me continuing on.

Because, I mean, it picked that up, but that wasn't one of the whys, like, you know what I mean?

So that's interesting.

Humor and originality also shine with beach too sandy, water too wet, turning one star reviews into comedic entertainment.

Ultimately, podcasts resonate when they balance entertainment value and authenticity, making audiences feel informed, inspired, or simply connected.

I'm going to keep that last line.

So that's why I always say if you can make a point in your show with a personal story.

You heard how York was talking about how he feels like he knows Chris because he shares part of his life.

And I'm like, that's awesome.

He kind of made it sound like there are times when Chris is just like, hey, I had French toast today.

That's not really my jam.

But hey, sometimes people want to know what kind of jam you're putting on that French toast or whatever it is.

So it's.

It's something you can't get anyplace else.

And in some cases, it can save you time.

I mentioned AI Goes to College.

That's my buddy, Craig Van Slyke.

And I was talking to him, I go, man, I can't keep up with all these AI tools.

And he's like, yeah, that's why you need to listen to my show.

And so again, sometimes you save people time.

You're serving their audience, and that's the value.

So I thought that was rather interesting.

I've been.

I definitely use more chat, GPT and perplexity than I have in the past three months.

So now what the heck is my favorite show and why?

And I'm gonna cheat because I made you pick one.

I'll just give you some.

Some honorable mentions.

And the one was really interesting.

The other night, I went out and saw a movie, the Fire Inside, about this female boxer.

If you haven't seen it, definitely see it when it comes on streaming.

Great story.

But I'm driving home and it's raining and it's dark.

And this makes me sound like I'm old, but I hate driving in the rain at night.

And it dawned on me.

I hated that when I was in my 20s, but I was kind of, you know, you're gripping the.

The wheel A little more.

And I put on Bandrew says with Bandrew Scott.

And what was interesting is I tune into Bandrew to hear about YouTube and Mike stuff, and he was not talking about any of that stuff.

He was talking about his favorite movies, his favorite music.

And Bandrew and I, I feel, have a lot in common.

We both kind of like dark humor, we both play the guitar.

We both self deprecate on a regular basis.

And it was kind of like letting in my friend, my very talkative friend.

And he sat in the front seat and just started telling me about all his favorite stuff and it really chilled me out.

So is the Bandrew says podcast my favorite?

But no, it was an interesting experiment.

And again, I feel like I know Bandrew even though you know that I know that I know that you know that I don't really know him.

I know what Bandrew does behind the mic and it makes me laugh and it informs me.

So there's that.

And then the show I listen to the most every day.

I start off with Pod News podnews.net with James Kridlin.

I hear that before I get out of bed.

That is almost my alarm clock.

Basically, I have your flash briefing from the woman in the tube from Amazon.

I have it set up to play that.

It gives me the weather, tells me what is going on, and then James come on.

And then I think I get a Bible verse or something like that.

So is that my favorite show?

No, but definitely the most listened to.

And I like the extended dance version that is Pod News Weekly with Sam Sethi.

Great show.

And I'm actually supporting that show monetarily because it's a great show.

So what's your favorite show, Dave?

And I think I'm gonna go.

And this might be because it's not a podcast about podcasting, because that's what I listen to 95% of the time.

And that show is no agenda.

And I think there are a couple things.

Number one, I've been listening for many years now, and so I feel like I know those guys.

I also know the host or one of them.

I know Adam Curry in kind of a.

Like, know him in a showbiz kind of way.

Like, he knows me.

I know him.

Got to hang out with him at a conference, at the Spark conference.

Got to meet his wife, so we're aware of each other.

Got to appear with him on stage.

That was great.

So it's always great to hear Adam.

And I go back with Adam back to 2005.

He was the first podcast I ever Heard which was, we don't need no stinking transmitters.

The daily source code.

And so the reason I like this show is I hate the media.

Basically think it's crap.

I think right now the NFL is putting on a classic example of how to just cheese off your audience because it's hard to find their product.

Their product isn't very good.

Netflix made $150 million to have football, American Football Roy on Netflix.

And the games were awful.

And now you have to pay to see more games.

And I'm.

I just think in the next five to 10 years, we're going to see the NFL kind of maybe have to think about how they treat their fans.

So in general.

And I like when I watch the news and they're like, hey, our top story this morning is, hey, the new red cup is out from Starbucks.

I'm like, do you think I don't know that's a commercial?

And when I hear them say things like, bird flu is up by, you know, 48%, I'm like, yeah, but how many people is that?

Because if you have two people and you go up to, I don't know, four.

Never do math, by the way, live.

But that could be 40 something percent.

It's just the media just so.

I love the fact that the no Agenda show takes it, deconstructs it, and they'll point out things like, hey, like they just put out an episode and it was interesting about.

It was just clips about COVID which has been, you know, four years ago.

And you forget all the weird reports that we were going through because we didn't know what we're going through.

But that was interesting.

And they put that out because they were on a vacation.

But I like the show and there are parts of it I really don't like, but this is the ultimate value for value show.

And I actually give them $11.11 every month because I like their show.

And they will.

Then they have a section where they thank the people that made the artwork for each episode.

And I'm listening in my car.

I'm not looking at the artwork.

I don't care about that.

But that's okay.

I understand that that artwork can help them get found.

And so those people that make the artwork are on Team no Agenda, and so am I.

And then the thing that makes them the best is all these people watching.

And then if you donate, like they have people in episodes donate a thousand dollars.

And maybe donate is not the right word.

I can hear my buddy Ralph going, quit saying donate.

You have to Be a nonprofit to do that.

But you get the idea.

And they'll have literally people donate hundreds of dollars and in some cases thousands of dollars.

Well, that's a part that for me, although they can make it very entertaining, they play a lot of sound clips on that and sound effects that can be somewhat entertaining, but at times not so much.

But I'm getting an idea of the news that I need to pay attention to because the right is too far right, the left is too far left.

And they make fun of both of them and in an entertaining way.

And it's can be at times two hours long.

And I still at times go, oh, it's over.

Because I will fast forward through the parts that I don't like.

But it's.

It's serving me.

It's.

It's saving me a lot of time by not watching the news.

And I know if there's.

Because I come out on Thursday and Sunday, so I've noticed something comes out on Tuesday.

If it's really important, they'll talk about it on Thursday.

And if they don't talk about it, well, it wasn't that important.

So it's an interesting play.

And then I also, like I said, I watch last week, tonight, and things like that.

So that's my favorite show.

And I think the reason why is a.

It's information I can't get anyplace else because nobody else is giving me, you know, the headlines from Holland and, you know, Australia and Switzerland and Denmark.

And I'm feeling like a very stupid American that's geographically challenged right now.

And so I can't get that anyplace else.

And they do it in a fun, entertaining way.

They have a lot of jingles and there's jargon over there.

You'll.

You meet somebody from no Agenda.

They'll go, oh, in the morning, that's like their greeting when.

That's like their inside joke.

In fact, there are times when they will get on the news, like they will be like a call in person, you know, live from Peoria, we have Brendan.

And it's like, hey, you know, Larry, in the morning, I have a question.

And they don't.

It's just this weird greeting.

And it's.

It's the way.

It's their secret handshake that if you ever hear somebody on the radio or on TV start off with hey, in the morning.

And then they go under their thing.

That's their way of saying, I'm a no Agenda lister, which is kind of cute in a way, but that's why?

It's my favorite.

So many people say, well, the thing with YouTube is people will turn on your video and then just listen to it in their pocket.

And so here's something to think about.

So you're going to go buy a bunch of lights, you're going to start showering, you might put on some makeup, maybe shave a little so that you can be on video, so that these people that are pushing the numbers saying that, you know, podcasts are booming on YouTube so that those people cannot look at you while they listen.

I'm like, that's something that went, hmm, there's.

There's something to think about when you're doing video, when you're, you know, combing your hair and everything else.

I'm doing this so somebody cannot watch me.

That's interesting.
